Tableau Public is nearly identical to the full-featured Tableau Desktop product, but absolutely FREE. Primary restrictions: no remote database connections, instead you use Excel, Access, CSV and text-based data sources; all work you create in this product can only be saved to the hosted Tableau Public web site, this means your work and data in it is visible to the whole world; and Tableau Public has size limitations for the total amount of project storage available for your user account (currently 25 MB.)

Note that you must first create a Tablea Data Extract of your data to publish from the desktop to the hosted Tableau Public. Tableau Reader is a free application that lets people view analytical insights and visualizations built in Tableau Desktop. Desktop users create interactive data visualizations and share them with you as packaged workbooks. With Reader you can view and interact with their Tableau results by filtering, sorting, printing and examining data.
