In 2014, of the 38 million men in the United States between the ages of 18 and 34, about 5 million were jobless and 1 million were incarcerated. Young men with less education and young black men were much likelier than their counterparts to be jobless or incarcerated.
The share of young men who are jobless or incarcerated has been rising. In 1980, 11 percent of young men were jobless or incarcerated; in 2014, the share was 16 percent.
